Prepping Your Lawn for the Winter Months

Do you want beautiful, lush grass in the spring? Of course you do! Well, there are things that you can do over the colder months to help with that.

Raking

Dead grass, organic debris, and leaves can freeze and thaw over the winter. When this happens, soluble forms of nitrates and phosphate can be released. This becomes a problem because when the ground thaws in the spring, these chemicals can run off and end up in surface water.

Other benefits of raking include reducing brown patches and helping prevent your yard from becoming sun-deprived.

Fertilizing

Most people associate fertilizing lawns with spring, but it’s important to fertilize in the late fall before the first frost hits. Doing so ensures that your grass has proper nutrients to survive the harsher winter months. Fertilizing will also promote root and shoot growth of your grass.

Seeding

Did you know that turf roots grow a lot in the fall and winter? This is why it’s an important time to seed. Be sure to select a high quality seed because cheaper seed may have a harder time resisting insects, disease, and drought. You’ll want to water the seed each day until it germinates. This usually takes between 10 and 20 days.

Mowing

Mowing isn’t something that you only do in the spring and summer months. Your grass is actually still growing in the colder months. You’ll want to try to keep your grass between 2 to 2.5 inches long. If your grass grows longer than 3 inches, you can run into issues like matting, which can lead to snow mold.

Watering

Be sure to keep watering your grass until the ground freezes.

Being proactive with your lawn in the colder months will enable you to reap the rewards of a beautiful and healthy lawn in the spring. Yes, it will take more effort, but it will pay off and save you money in the long run.
