Gardening Tips for Vancouverites

Do you live in Vancouver and have an interest in gardening?

With spring, comes beautiful flowers, gardening, and time outside enjoying the yard. What you can plant, and what will flourish, greatly varies depending on the climate in which you live. This is why it is so important to get as much information as possible about the flowers and plants you are interested in before you purchase them. Research online or ask the staff at your local greenhouse.

Here are some gardening tips for people who reside in the Vancouver area:

Ask yourself: What is my gardening goal?

Before you even think of going to the greenhouse to buy seeds or plants, you first have to be realistic as to how much time you have to spend in the garden. Do you want something more low maintenance, or do you want to do this as more of a hobby?

Check the quality of your soil:

There is no point in investing in anything, only to find out that it won’t have a chance to properly grow and flourish. Get your soil tested to see where you stand,   and if any modifications need to be made. If you are planting flowers in pots, ensure to buy good quality soil.

Should I just choose flowers based on colors I like?

Although this can be tempting, it is not a good idea. Consider if the plant will look good once the flowers are gone and if the plant produces anything (berries for example) to give you more bang for your buck. You also need to be aware of how much space you have and what you can accommodate – stay away from overcrowding. Less is more.

What is one flower that can benefit my garden?

There are many, but lavender would be at the top of the list because bees love it – the pollination from the bees will promote strong growth of your garden. Not to mention, it looks great and smells amazing!

How do herbs grow in the Vancouver climate?

Herbs are ideal for growing in this area – and you can use them to top off all of the fresh summer dishes you will cook! Start with herbs like rosemary, basil, thyme, and cilantro.

I live in an apartment, so am I out of luck when it comes to gardening?

There is always the possibility to grow something. Herbs are perfect for condo dwellers, as they take up little space (grow vertical), and won’t demand much of your time or attention.
